2008 Race Reports & Comments

Orange County Half Marathon I was struggling a little bit with my right hip so I wasn't pushing too hard. Seems like I injured it somehow but it's getting better.

Kinetic Half Ironman The Kinetic half was an unplanned event for me. In truth I only did it because Adrian Fenty (my friend and Mayor of Washington DC) convinced me to do it with him. The race was in Lake Anna, Virginia, right next to this power plant. I had a good swim in 31 minutes - although I didn't feel 'loose' until the 2nd half. We had to run about 100 yards on the beach between the two laps. The ride was similar: two laps where I felt crappy the first but stronger on the second half. It was a rolling course of 56 miles and fairly windy at times. The run was a 3-lap 4.4 mile loop. Unfortunately, I got serious stomach problems and had to fertilize the surrounding forest 4 times along the way.....I tried to analyze what I may have eaten and concluded it may have been a) the mushrooms in the pasta dish the night before (never try something new on or just before race day!) and b) the fact that I ate way too late and didn't get enough sleep 2 nights prior to the race. I figure I could have taken off at least 12 minutes off my time which would have put me in the to 6 overall or so. Anyways, here I am in Dubai - less than 48 hours later....At least I got a good race in the legs before this long tirp down here. My body is jet lagged but this is my 'real job....' Unfortunately....In sports, Espen
